Joe's Life

For Magellan, Who Died Across the Sea:

For Magellan, Who Died Across the Sea

This love is too subtle
to touch the lives of
most of you
are not aware
how we go in circles
wasting our breath that
is inhaled and exhaled
by plants and
animals together, traveling
in great circles like Magellan
had dreamed before he sailed
and died across the sea.

This craziness amuses
me sometimes I cannot
believe this is me getting thin
and wild like loose plaster
on the floor, like yesterday's
bowel movement, like wild
animals suffering.

Even if you held me
near you could not
touch me with your
fingers that wave
like grasses in the air
leave trails of vapor.

If you didn't know where
I was, you could pretend
I was behind you,
smiling.

No,
time for poetry warms
my broken lesions.
Alone I cannot live.

Sometimes I suck on
your ear lobes are
as dear to me as the rest
of you are not aware
how sometimes we go in circles,
traveling in great circles.
